Today I slept in and it was awesome! We decided to go down and have the buffet breakfast in the hotel around 930 or so. The buffet was huge! I literally had like 15 mini pancakes with Nutella, tons of bread and biscuit things, sausages, all kinds of fruit. It was delicious! Needless to say I was stuffed afterwards! Once we finished I went back to the room and chilled some more watching tv and skyping.
Around 1230 I went out to the pool for a little while researching where to go today. I had a general idea to take the BTS (Bangkok transportation system), basically a metro, into the city and explore. I decided to go to Siam which is the main hub for the BTS and I heard there was a huge mall there. My dad decided to be lame and wanted to stay at the hotel all day so I was going exploring alone. I left the pool around 130 and walked over to the airport to take the free shuttle to the other airport which was connected to the BTS. Well it turns out you can only take the free shuttle if you have a flight that day so I found another bus that would take me to the BTS for only $1. It was a quick 15-20min ride and once I got to the BTS station it was really easy to get a ticket to where I wanted to go. The ticket to siam was also only $1. Our driver lied when he said the only way downtown was by taxi which is what I figured .
Once I got to the siam station I found the mall immediately, it was huge and impossible to miss since it was connected to the BTS station.
The mall was GIGANTIC!! Literally the biggest mall I've ever been in, there were 7 floors with literally every possible store you could imagine. As I walked in I was surrounded by high end fashion stores like Louis vutton Gucci, etc. as I kept walking there were more diamond and super expensive watch shops it was so cool. Definitely not where the average Thai person was shopping. On the third floor they had shops from all of the luxury and sport car dealers, I'm talking Aston Martin, lotus, Maserati, Rolls Royce, Prosche, BMW, Lamborghini. And all of them had numerous cars on display! There must have been over $100 million in cars! It was so cool!
I walked around the mall for literally 2 hours and still hadn't seen the whole thing! The ground floor had an aquarium where you could swim with sharks and the top floor had a huge movie theater! I decided I was going to go see the lone survivor at 5pm since it was only $4. This gave me about an hour and a half to eat and explore some more.
I decided to walk out to the street since the mall was right next to the center of the riots that were going on. In case you hadn't heard there are riots going on in the city, which is the reason my dad decided to go behind my back and book a hotel so far away. But anyway as I walked out of the hotel I saw the 'riots'. They were not scary at all! They had the streets all shut down and it was basically a huge party/market. They literally had a band playingn music and people dancing it was awesome!
I felt really safe there they had security at every enterance to make sure you didn't bring any weapons in and had medical tents in case something happened. I walked around the area for 40 minutes or so and bought myself a new case and a longer charging cable for the iPhone. Afterwards I decided to walk back into the mall and get some food. The food court in the mall was ridiculous, literally every restaurant ou could imagine. I ended up at this random noodle place where, again, I was the only white dude in sight! The food was pretty good! After I walked back up to the theater to catch the movie.
The movie was good! It was interesting because right before the movie started everyone stood up as they played some sort of tribute video to the royal family, it was kind of weird and propaganda like. After the movie I decided to get some Garret's popcorn since they had a shop downstairs. Little did I know that the real line for the popcorn started outside! It was literally a 1 HOUR WAIT just to get popcorn! I guess the Asians really love Garret's popcorn too haha! So I decided to just head back to the hotel. Catching the BTS back was easy the difficult part was finding the bus I needed to take to get back to the airport.
Once I got off the train I found the bus stop, the only problem was there were like 50 different buses and all of them were moving and picking people up. It was all happening very fast so you kind of had to know what you were doing in order to catch the bus. At this point it was 830pm, I figured the bus to the airport was still running but I wasn't sure. Just as I was looking it up in my phone I saw my bus! Once I got on it was a quick ride back to the hotel. Then public transportation here is actually really awesome and simple to use! Once I got back I got ready for bed. Tomorrow we leave for Chiang Mai which is in the mountains in northern Thailand. Don't worry it's still 90s and sunny there! Stay warm Midwest friends!
